Millions of people lose their life from snake bite as they don’t have access to vital anti-venom medication.

1, 38,000 people lose their life due to snakebite and 400,000 people are permanently disabled. Most of them are from a rural part of south-east Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and are between the ages of 10 and 30.

Snake bites are classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization (WHO) and asked the nations to focus more effort on ensuring effective treatments are available.

Snakebite | In brief

  • About 5.4 million snake bites occur each year, resulting in 1.8 to 2.7 million cases of envenoming (poisoning from snake bites). There are between 80,00  and 138,000 deaths and around three times as many amputations and other permanent disabilities each year.
  • Envenoming affects women, children and farmers in poor rural communities in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Without treatment, bites can lead to severe paralysis that may prevent breathing.
  • Snake bites may cause bleeding disorders that can lead to a fatal illness, cause irreversible kidney failure and severe local tissue destruction. Snake bites can lead to permanent disability and limb amputation.
