As per Hinduism, it’s considered auspicious to worship Lord Ganesha before starting any new activity as he is regarded as “Vidhanharta” Lord who removes obstacles. He is considered to be a representation of wisdom and happiness. “Shree Ganeshaya Namaha” is chanted before starting an activity, and the following mantra/prayer is sung.
“Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha |
Nirvigna Kuru Maydev Sarvakaryesu Sarvadha |.”
The above mantra is in Sanskrit and which translates as follows ” O Lord with Twisted Trunk, Huge Body and whose radiance is equal to crores of sun. May all the activities that I undertake be without any obstacles all the time.”
Lord Ganesha is considered as the God of Knowledge. To attain clarity of thoughts and the ability to differentiate between good and evil, the worship of Lord Ganesha has been included in Hinduism.
Now let’s talk about Why Lord Ganesh is considered as the prime God for worship?
There are few old mythologies behind this which are as follows.
- As per Padma Puran:- A question about who needs to be regarded as the prime god for worship was raised while creating this universe. All the lords went to lord Bhrama to seek his opinion on this. Lord Bhrama asked everyone to circle this universe seven times, and whoever completes this task first will be worshipped as prime God in this universe. After hearing this, every one except Lord Ganesha went on to travel around this universe with their vehicles. Lord Ganeshas vehicle was a mouse which is slow as compared to others. Seeing this, Lord NaradMuni suggested a workaround for this situation and Ganesha acted upon it. He wrote Lord Ram’s name and circled around it seven times and went to Lord Bhrama first. He was declared as the prime god for worship as the name Ram is a representation of Lord Rama who is regarded as the preserver of this entire universe.
- As per Shiv Puran: – When the same question was raised, and Lord Shiva’s opinion was asked. He asked all the lord to circle this universe trice, and whoever comes first will be considered as the prime deity. Knowing his vehicles limitation using his intelligence and wisdom, he went around his parent lord Shiva and Parvati trice and worshipped them. Lord Shiva was pleased with Ganeshas deeds and said “No one in this universe is as wise as you are. By circling your parent’s trice, you got the blessings of all the three world which is far more than just circling this universe. Anyone who worships you before starting any activity will be able to complete it without any obstacles. And will be able to surpass all the obstacles and attain his goal”. From then on, Lord Ganesha was considered as the prime deity for worship by everyone.
A similar story was told in the southern part of India with a slight variation. Here the race was between Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya and was for obtaining divine fruit from Lord Shiva instead of being termed as a prime deity as mentioned in Shiv Puran.
